Asterix himself gives name to this excelent series about the
invincible Gauls. Using his vits and the druid's magic potion, he
is the main cause of Caesars torn laurel leaves. Asterix is,
besides the druid and in spite of the chiefs protests, the most
intelligent of the villagers. Obelix, Asterix' best friend, is
a straight forward and simple man. Obelix fell into the druid's
kettle when he was a boy, thus making the effect of the magic
potion permanent. Obelix' main course are roasted wild
boars. Though Obelix might seem slow and thickheaded, he's the
most loyal friend you can ever have.
The druid getafix is a key person among the villagers. Only
Tutatis knows what the village would look like without the druids
magic potion. Probably all with roman architecture. Getafix
seldom panics. He is calmness itself. In spite of his rumour to
be calm, there has been incidents where he totally freaked out.
For example when he was out of stoneoil, an important ingredient
in the magic potion!! The villagers are aweare of how dependant
they are on Getafix. We can freshly remember the crisis that
occured when the druid was taken out in "The big fight".
Vitalstatistix is the one and only chief of the invincible Gauls. The villagers respects him in a way, though he probably is on the end of his prime. The chief reigns with calmness and authority. Nothing is more important than keeping the villagers together. The only thing Vitalstatistix fears, is the heaven falling down on his head. It might be said too, that he is fairly afraid of loosing his position as chief. "The big fight" will tell you this.
Cacofonix is the village troubadour. In spite of, as he himself claims, a tough audience, Cacofonix lives as happy as a troubadour can. As readers we are seldom allowed to enjoy his magnificent talent, thanks to the other villagers. Even if Cacofonix' talent isn't very appreciated among the villagers, they look upon him as one of them. There's even a whole story dedicated to Cacofonix' very special talent: "Asterix chez Cheherazde".
Julius Caesar is the full-time enemy of the villagers. His undisputed rule over the Roman empire is disrupted only by the invincible Gauls in the little village between all those Roman fortresses. Many is the time he has tried to beat the Gauls, and just as many times he has been defeated. How many times can a man loose his face to the invincible Gauls? The story "Asterix et Cleopatre" is an excellent axample of Caesar loosing his face. An explanation of Caesar's defeats might be found in his own ranks. His officers are not of the best breed, and are often decadent and unskilled. His troops are no better. Yes, they are great at marching and building camps.BUT!!!! What they sorely miss is intelligence!! And maybe a little drop of the druids magic potion....The Romans are crazy!
